A Living Community at Christmas

The Christmas Season on the northern Border of Minnesota and Canada is in full swing in Baudette in Lake of the Woods County.  Our local Chamber featured a tree lighting ceremony earlier this season but continues to provide the community with unique shopping experiences and free Saturday matinees for the kids.  Last weekend was a busy time as the restored Depot in town featured crafts, choirs and lefse making demonstrations and sales.  Santa has been showing up around town and the Holiday Gas Station even made him a special chair to sit in and greet the visitors. Churches have their annual bazaars showing off the talents of many in the area and carolers gathered Sunday evening to visit the assisted living quarters, the Care Center, the hospital and a senior apartment building. Christmas cheer was everywhere as voices were lifted in harmonies and smiles were bright as many were blessed by the music.

Another feature of this small community is the annual Community Dinners. Area churches take turns putting on a holiday feast both at Thanksgiving and Christmas inviting anyone to come for a festive and free meal. Up to 125 people come to these meals that are served to people who otherwise might be alone. The Salvation Army partners with the churches in providing a great meal. And oh, yes, don’t forget about the sound of Christmas bells as the Salvation Army collects funds in their buckets around town providing aide to individuals who might need a little help during the year.

This is a very giving community as reported by the chairman of the event which has also been seen when there have been other needs in the community and people step up to the plate to do benefits to help those in need. We celebrate the spirit of Christmas this season, but this community celebrates the spirit of giving all year round. It’s wonderful to live in a small community who cares. Come visit us!!!
