Big Walleyes the Focus on Midwest Outdoors TV

With the upcoming open water season here (if you fish the Rainy River) or fast approaching if you fish Lake of the Woods (still ice covered with ice anglers), this week’s segment of Midwest Outdoors is timely.  Every once in a while, the sun, moon and stars align.  Such was a show filmed this past summer while fishing with Greg Jones of Midwest Outdoors when numerous big walleyes showed up in good numbers.

The show was featuring the great summer fishing on Lake of the Woods.  We were pulling crawler harnesses from a charter boat.  With very little wind on this given day, the captain literally had to bump the big charter in gear momentarily and then drift almost to a stop then repeat.  Let’s just say it was effective as we caught a number of big walleyes as well as good numbers of eaters.

Lake of the Woods is called The Walleye Capital of the World.  Good walleye fishing exists literally 12 months per year.  Whether you bring your own boat or jump in with a guide or on a charter boat, it is estimated millions of walleyes, not to mention saugers, swim in our waters.

Anglers fish all three areas of Lake of the Woods.  The Rainy River feeds the big lake from the south and provides incredible fishing opportunities throughout the year.  Walleyes, sturgeon and smallmouth bass are normally the focus on the river.

The second part of Lake of the Woods is Big Traverse Bay which is the big open water of Lake of the Woods.  These waters are loaded with walleyes, saugers, pike, perch and a variety of other fish.

The third area is the Northwest Angle.  The Angle is the northernmost point of the contiguous United States and is where the 14,442 islands of Lake of the Woods begin.  Big walleyes live throughout the system and are caught often.  The lake and river are known for big walleyes and good numbers of fish, hence, The Walleye Capital of the World.

The episode will air this weekend on Fox Sports North, and other stations airing Midwest Outdoors.  The other option, check it out here!  Get out fishing this summer and make some memories.
