Lake of the Woods PeeWees Skate the Rainy River

This week a local youth hockey team skated the Rainy River from Sportsman’s Lodge near Wheeler’s Point to the VFW in Baudette Bay. The skate was 11.5 miles long and the team made the trek in about an hour and a half. It doesn’t happen every year where the ice is as smooth as hockey rink to make this possible. The kids had the day off from school and what a great way to get out side and enjoy the sunshine. Imaging if they could have done this last week when we had 45 mph winds. Up here in Northern Minnesota hockey has a rich tradition. The small population seems to produce some great talent. With players going on to play juniors, college, or even the pro ranks. Right now Alex Lyon a 2011 graduate is playing for the AHL Lehigh Valley Phantoms, the minor team of the Philadelphia Flyers. With many other players going on to play after high school as well. This weekend the Lake of the Woods Bantams will be competing in the State Tournament for there level.

Here is a short video of the skate. Simply click it to play. In the words of the late great Herb Brooks “the legs feed the wolves”.
