Northland Outdoors Features Spring Fishing on the Rainy River

Spring Fishing on Northland Outdoors

Spring fishing activity in many parts of the Midwest really slows down.  Up at Lake of the Woods and the Rainy River, however, things get exciting.  Rainy River fishing is in full gear!

It’s the spring tradition for many, targeting walleyes.  Some walleyes are resident fish that stayed in river all winter.  Others are fish coming into the Rainy River from the lake looking to take part in the spawn.  Either way, it is the first time many anglers have the chance to drop the boat in the water after a long winter.  It is also the chance to catch big numbers of walleyes or perhaps a walleye of a lifetime.

If you haven’t had the chance to take part in spring fishing the Rainy River, this show will shed some light on why anglers get excited.  Northland Outdoors spent some time in the boat last spring with Bret Amundson, Jamie Dietman and Joe Henry looking to share the story of spring fishing.

Well, I think they did a very nice job!  Check out the entire show below.

Spring Fishing Seasons

The walleye season is extended on Lake of the Woods and on the Rainy River as this system is border water with Canada, thus different seasons apply.

Walleye season is open through April 14th.  It closes for a bit and then opens again for the 2017 MN Fishing Opener on May 13th.

The sturgeon season goes between a catch and release season and a keep season up until May 16th.  Here is a chart to help keep track of the sturgeon season.

Another popular species of fish that doesn’t see as much attention on the Rainy River but is present, especially in back bays of the river that are warming up, are northern pike.  The pike in this system grow to world class proportions with many fish over 40″ and exceeding 20 lbs.

Spring is an incredible time for Rainy River Fishing.  Whether you are hauling in a trophy walleye, 5 foot long sturgeon or 25lb pike, there is an adventure around every bend!
