U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar Visits Lake of the Woods
As a small out-state tourism destination, it is sure good to know we have friends in high places watching out and fighting for our best interests in a much bigger world. One of our friends paid a visit to Lake of the Woods on Wednesday and spent time discussing topics that effect resorts, hotels, tourism and small businesses in Lake of the Woods County as well as greater MN. U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar spent time with members of Lake of the Woods Tourism, Lake of the Woods County and a couple of special guests in a beautiful setting at Border View Lodge on the banks of the Rainy River.
One of the topics discussed was the new pilot project Lake of the Woods has been chosen for by U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The pilot project allows anglers who are staying on the U.S. side of the lake who fish in Canada and touch land during their day of fishing to check back in with any number of participating resorts vs having to travel up to 16 miles round trip to the nearest OARS phones while checking back into the U.S. Senator Klobuchar as well as Congressman Collin Peterson, Senator Al Franken and Congressman Rick Nolan have all been supportive of this initiative.
Senator Klobuchar had visited the NW Angle in July of 2013 and had assisted in working through cross border challenges as well as other topics effecting Lake of the Woods at that time.
Other topics discussed in Senator Klobuchar’s visit were shortage of employees, shortage of short term rental housing, current trends in area tourism, broadband, and more expansive cellular service in remote areas just to name a few.
Senator Klobuchar has made herself and her staff available in various situations in which her broad understanding of topics, solutions, programs and connections with people in the know have been very helpful in our progress.
We finished our discussion with a nice photo on the banks of the Rainy River on a picture perfect Minnesota summer day.
