What’s NEW at Lake of the Woods?!

Summer has been an exciting time at Lake of the Woods. Spring and summer bring boats galore to our region to explore the great waters of this International Lake. Local people and Tourists continue to fish these beautiful waters and have great times of fishing and fun and fellowship with the great outdoors.

Fall is soon upon us, but we must mention how many NEW things are on the scene for this area. Our dear icon, Willie Walleye, was in bad repair and he was replaced by an incredible monument that now adorns the landscape of Baudette Bay opening to the Rainy River as well as overseeing welcome travelers to and from our great neighbors to the north, Canada. You’d be amazed at the number of pictures that are taken with Willie each year, winter and summer alike.

Speaking of Canada, we are seeing the beginnings of a NEW international bridge being built between the US and Canada. Both countries are again in partnership for this great endeavor which will be completed in 2019. The last structure was built and dedicated in 1960 and will now be replaced with NEW structure.  Both are sharing the cost of the bridge. Great partnership!!

The city of Baudette, Lake of the Woods County and the local Housing Board have taken on another NEW undertaking. We have been very short of affordable, rental properties and through much research and hard working individuals too numerous to name, Maple Gate Apartments are being built and are scheduled to open in November. There are 24 apartments with 1, 2, and 3 bedroom units available.  For more info, contact Janice at 218-634-2422.

Here’s one more exciting NEW event in the area!! A very generous donor saw fit to donate monies for the building of a grand, state of the art, hockey arena for Lake of the Woods. The new facility is located at the east end of Lake of the Woods School.  It is a structure of pre-formed concrete slabs and fill serve this community and area in many ways. It is hopeful that it will be completed by February of 2019 and will be fully functional for conventions, weddings, concerts and of course, our beloved sport of hockey. Students at the school will benefit greatly as they make use of the Olympic size swimming pool and also the state of the art weight room.

Please visit our area and experience the Newness that is here and feel welcomed to participate in the great future of the area.
