Book Your Awesome LOW Ice Fishing Trip Now!

Wigwam Resort Ice Fishing

Book your Ice Fishing Trip NOW!! It’s not too early! Requests are coming in and resorts are already taking reservations for that once in a lifetime ice fishing trip to Lake of the Woods. Did I say, “once”? No, many anglers frequent the waters/ice of Lake of the Woods many times during the winter months. Why? ice fishing Because this Walleye Capital of the World™ is a first-class fishery and continues to be so. Permanent fish houses, sleeper fish houses, and day wheel houses make up an entire village with plowed roads and sectioned off areas that are continually being groomed by experienced ice staff.

Summer fishing is great as anglers of all ages enjoy the shimmering waters of Lake of the Woods. Soon, however, those shimmering waters start cooling down and currents slow and before you know it, you’ll see a skim of ice forming on the bays, the big lake and the river. Then, Winter is on!!!

Yes, winter is right around the corner. The standard joke in northern MN is that we have two seasons. Winter is coming and Winter is here. Resort owners are already prepping their iceice fishing houses with fresh paint and accessories and moving them closer to the road so that they’re ready for launching as soon as the ice is on. When the ice first forms on the lake, resort owners and guides are out there immediately measuring the depth of the ice.

The process of forming roads over this big water is amazing. It is no small task to forge those roads so that ice depth goes deeper and can allow travel to Four Mile Bay, or over Pine Island to Big Traverse, or around Morris Point onto the big water. Hats off to those who have to move with great wisdom so that anglers can enjoy a great experience on the ice.

Outfitters want to keep all the visitors to the area safe and won’t allow anyone on the ice until it’s safe. The MN DNR has a great page showing guidelines for safe ice travel and it needs to be adhered to by all. ice fishing

Lake of the Woods features three distinctive areas. The Northwest Angle is an extremely beautiful area featuring the northernmost point marked with a buoy. This area builds roads across the lake to the other beautiful islands of Oak and Flag. Both islands run full-time resorts winter and summer. What a great way to experience this winter wonderland. The Northwest Angle, where our 14,552 islands begin, is the is the home of excellent ice fishing. The diversity of fish is unbelievable in this area of the lake.

The Rainy River features resorts that travel their ice houses up the road and then onto the lake when the ice will hold them. Check out what each resort has to offer by going to www.lakeofthewoodsmn.com/lodging. Yes, the Lake of the Woods website is brand new and full of great information with even a virtual vacation guide to view there.

South Shore Resorts often forge their own roads and it’s amazing what seems to be four-lane highways on the lake. Then, of course, streets are mapped out so that anglers know right where to travel. It’s not too early to book your ice fishing (hard water) trip. Planning your next ice fishing trip should be a breeze. Picture waking up in the morning, getting some grub, then hoping into a heated snow bomber which brings you to your fish house which is already heated. Then proceed to catch fish all day long. It doesn’t get any better than that. Book now!

Fishing Report 10.14.2024

fishing lake of the woods mn

On the South End…  Fall fishing on Lake of the Woods is excellent right now.  The colder water temps have the fish snapping.

Walleyes and saugers are being caught in a variety of locations across the south shore from 20 to 27 feet.  Water temps are in the low to mid 50’s.

Jigging with frozen, or live emerald shiners is catching a pile of fish.  Anchor up and jig over the side of the boat.  Typically, lots of small fish to sort through but you will get your keepers along with some larger walleyes.

Jig colors to consider are gold, glow white, glow red, chartreuse, orange, and pink.  Gold combined with any one of these colors is often a good choice.

On the Rainy River… The river continues to get better and better with more walleyes moving in each week.  Good fish being caught in many sections of the river.  The morning and evening hours have had the best bite.

Walleyes are actually being caught using three methods.  Jigging with frozen or live emerald shiners, pulling spinners and trolling crankbaits.  15 – 25 feet of water has been the norm.

Sturgeon fishing continues to pick up as the water cools.  The “Catch and Release” sturgeon season is in place right now.

The river holds a myriad of species of fish.  Crappies, pike, smallmouth bass, suckers, bullheads and even an eelpout or two are being caught up and down the river.

Four Mile Bay is also holding some nice walleyes as they make their way in from the lake.  Various areas on the edge of the current and channel break are good spots to begin.

Up at the NW Angle... Another great week of fall fishing up at the Angle.  Walleyes are keying in on various areas with structure.  Points, neck down areas with some current and transition areas from rock to mud are good right now.

Big Pike

Walleyes are the most sought after but in the fall, lots of muskie and crappie anglers are around as well.  Good reports on a variety of species including jumbo perch and pike as the waters cool.

Put on some warm fall clothes, make sure your camera is ready and make some incredible fall fishing memories.  There is still time to get in that last fall trip.

Fishing Report 10.9.2024

Fishing Lake of the Woods, MN

On the South End… Walleye and sauger fishing remains excellent with numbers of walleyes and saugers being caught.  The fall bite is definitely on.  Anglers are finding fish a bit shallower this week, ranging from 20 to 25 feet across the south shore of Lake of the Woods.

Jigging with frozen, or live emerald shiners, is catching most of the fish.  Locating fish on your sonar and anchoring up for about 30 minutes will normally give you a good idea of what is living in the area and a good strategy.
Areas across the south shore including the Lighthouse Gap (where the Rainy River enters Lake of the Woods) west to the Morris Point area, west to Zippel Bay area to Long Point are all still producing nice fish.
Successful jig colors in the stained waters of LOW are gold, glow white, glow red, chartreuse, orange, and pink.  Gold combined with any one of these colors is often a good choice.
On the Rainy River… The river continues to get better and better.  There are definitely more shiners and walleyes in the river this week.  Good fish being caught in many sections of the river.
Trolling crankbaits in the fall is also a well known strategy to catch hungry walleyes chasing shiners.  A great way to cover water and get that reaction strike.

Sturgeon fishing is really picking up as the water cools.  Sturgeon are catch and release right now into the month of April, 2025 when the “keep season” begins again. fishing

Some nice crappies, pike and smallmouth bass were also in the mix for fall anglers fishing the river this week.
The river is a great option for small boats and also a nice option if it is windy.
Up at the NW Angle… Fishing is flat out excellent up at the Angle.  Some anglers are fishing the MN side, others the Ontario side.  Walleyes are using a variety of areas, but structure such as points and neck down areas with some current are good right now.
A mixed bag of fish is the norm in these parts.  Walleyes, saugers, jumbo perch, crappies, pike, smallmouth bass and muskies are all being caught.
Fall fishing leading into early ice is some of the best fishing of the year and a beautiful time to be out.

Autumn in Lake of the Woods

fall colors trees

Autumn in Lake of the Woods is officially here. Leaves have been turning and falling and temps are starting to drop in the evenings. autumn

Most everyone who visits Lake of the Woods comments on two things, the beauty of the area and also the quietness that they experience in this Northwoods. While sitting on your deck at your cabin you’ll hear the sound of leaves falling, ducks flying and vocalizing and geese honking as they set their formations to head south. Lake of the Woods and the Northwest Angle are home to 50+ resorts who are always ready to give you a great experience in this north country.

Lake of the Woods is an interesting area. It is largely known as the Walleye Capital of the World with it’s first-class fishery. Features of the lake are it’s abundance of varieties of fish with walleye being the number one catch that anglers go for. Fish are always moving but it’s interesting to note that autumn leads the fish from deeper and cooler waters to more shallow waters closer to the south side of the lake. Of course, they’re always hungry and the shiner minnows head up river to spawn and the hungry walleyes follow. So….autumn brings another aspect of fall river fishing to the area.

Autumn
Aerial View of the Rainy River

Another interesting thing is watching the big river. The Rainy River, which divides the United States and Canada, has a fast-flowing current all summer. Then when autumn arrives, you can start to see the current slow considerably.  As one watches this happen, you know that soon and very soon that current will stop all together and you’ll sure to see a skim of ice forming. That’s when you know autumn is past and the winter season is upon us.

Birding is another aspect of Lake of the Woods. Sand Hill Cranes enjoy this land but they are also noticing the cooler temps of autumn and are getting ready to migrate to the south. Seagulls are sitting around, waiting for their tickets to fly south and will leave us as do the fabulous white pelicans. One giant bird that we are happy to say never leaves is the Great Bald Eagle. You’ll find them high in the trees, or on roadsides picking up some road-kill, or flying  the waters and waiting for the next fish they can dive in and get. They often take advantage of left-overs of fish cleaning when available also.

It’s not unusual to find hundreds of geese sitting in fields that have been harvested. Yes, harvest is also in full swing with wild rice fields being harvested, wheat being harvested and sunflowers bowing their heads to be ready to be combined.

With the onset of autumn, when the tamaracs are golden against the green pines, and the aspens are brilliant, hunters look to visit this north country.  Geese draw hunters and many types of ducks draw hunters.  Bears have been in abundance this year and the hunt has been good. All varieties of grouse autumn occupy the back roads and forest areas where hunters love to travel. Yes, travel through the forest areas is a favorite pass-time for bikers or ATV advocates. The scenery is serene and beautiful and the quietness is captivating.

Autumn also brings the excitement of hunting white tail deer. Of course the Minnesota Dept of Natural Resources has all the information one needs for licensing and dates of each season. Whether you are a bow hunter or a rifle hunter, plan now for that great trip to the northland to “bag” that trophy buck or doe. Don’t forget that orange Is the most important color this fall season, not just because it’s on the trees but that color is the biggest safety factor when exploring the great outdoors.

School is in session and fall sports have begun.  Community members always seem to find time to clean out their garages and do garage sales and button everything up for the upcoming winter season.

Awww….this autumn season seems way too short sometimes for those last warm evenings on the deck or sitting around a campfire with friends. Don’t miss this season to enjoy the land and the quietness that autumn brings.

Fishing Report 10.1.2024

Fishing Lake of the Woods, MN

On the South End… Walleye and sauger fishing is very good with good numbers of fish being caught.  If you want to catch some numbers, the bite is on.  Anglers are finding fish ranging from 24 to 31 feet across the south shore of Lake of the Woods.

Jigging with frozen, or live emerald shiners is the ticket.  Locate fish on your sonar, anchor up and give it 30 minutes.  If not to your liking, relocate different fish and repeat.  Normally things will work out nicely over the course of the day.
Areas from right in front of the Lighthouse Gap where the Rainy River enters Lake of the Woods west to the Morris Point area, Zippel Bay area to Long Point are all producing.  There aren’t fish everywhere but there are various schools spread out across the entire south shore of the basin.
Successful jig colors in the stained waters of LOW are gold, glow white, glow red, chartreuse, orange, and pink.  Gold combined with any one of these colors is often a good choice.
Drifting spinners / crawlers or trolling crankbaits is still working for anglers as well.
Some really nice perch and an occasional pike are being caught mixed in with the walleyes and saugers.
For the anglers targeting smallmouth bass, there is a good bite on both the lake and Rainy River.
On the Rainy River… The river continues to produce some nice walleyes.  There are definitely some schools of shiners up and down the river and consequently, some nice walleyes in the river too.  Not the heavy run yet, but respectable for sure.

fishing
66 inch Sturgeon on Rainy River

Sturgeon fishing continues to pick up as water temps cool.  The sturgeon is catch and release from October 1st into the month of April, 2025 when you can keep one again.

The river is relatively small and a great option for small boats.  With a variety of boat ramps from the mouth of the river all the way to up the river to Birchdale, there are many options.

Up at the NW Angle… Walleye fishing remains strong on both sides of the border. Walleyes are using a variety of areas from mud flats to various areas with structure and neck down areas with some current.

It’s fall, which means a mixed bag of fish is common in these parts.  Walleyes, saugers, jumbo perch, crappies, pike, smallmouth bass and muskies are all being caught.

As water temps cool and the days get shorter, the bite will get even better!
