LAKE OF THE WOODS bike trails

Mountain biking at Lake of the Woods unfolds inside Beltrami Island State Forest. Forest roads and multi-use trails let riders explore at their own rhythm, from quick spins to longer loops, all surrounded by big woods and quiet terrain.

BELTRAMI ISLAND STATE FOREST RIDING

Beltrami Island State Forest spans Lake of the Woods, Roseau, and Beltrami counties and is Minnesota’s second-largest state forest.

What the forest lacks in mountains is made up for by northwoods beauty. The riding experience here is defined by big, remote landscapes and a strong sense of “get out there and roam”—ideal for riders who want distance, solitude, and natural scenery.

Much of the upland pine in the highly diverse forest was planted by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, and the area is also well known for wildlife viewing and bird watching.

ROUTES NEAR FAUNCE CAMPGROUND

The forest roads near Faunce Campground offer several relatively flat loop-route options for mountain biking.

Riders can combine connected logging and forest roads to create flexible rides of varying lengths, including loop routes up to about 30 miles—great for endurance rides, training miles, or scenic exploring at your own pace.

In addition to the forest road network, there are hunter walking trails in the area that are open to non-motorized vehicle use, providing additional options for riders who want to mix in different trail experiences.

RIDE SMART & SEASONAL RIDING

Forestry is a major industry in this region, and logging trucks frequently use forest roads during the week.

Riders should stay visible, ride alertly, and be prepared for truck traffic—weekends may be a better choice than weekdays for a quieter ride.

Snowmobile trails are generally not well suited to bike travel, as many pass through wet areas.

With fat tire bikes, early-ice travel on the lake becomes possible, allowing anglers or hunters to cover long distances where foot travel can be difficult.

In-town leisure ride options

In-town biking in Baudette is just 14 miles from the southern shores of Lake of the Woods and offers a more casual alternative, with routes connecting parks, waterfront areas, and community spaces.

These options are well suited for recovery rides, shorter outings, or pairing a ride with dining, sightseeing, and other Lake of the Woods activities.

It’s a good choice for families, mixed-ability groups, or anyone who wants a shorter ride with easy access to stops and amenities.
