The Best of the Northwest Angle and Islands
The Best of the Best can be found at the northernmost point of the contiguous United States. Known by locals as “The Angle”, it is home of some of the best fishing and snowmobiling on Lake of the Woods. A few years ago while the country suffered a “shut-down”, the Angle was a location that most people couldn’t venture to. That has changed! Now visitors from everywhere are excited to explore this northern locality.
The Northwest Angle is unique location as it forms the chimney at the very top of Minnesota. This was a surveyor’s mistake years and years ago, so the “Angle” which is part of Lake of the Woods County is only accessed by land by first driving through Canada. The “Angle is located on the northern side of Lake of the Woods, or when viewing a map, the “chimney”. The area is 596.3 miles, 473.2 miles of that is water. It is also the northern most point of the contiguous 48 states. The Angle is in coexistence with Angle Township and Lake of the Woods County, surrounded by Manitoba and Ontario.
Angle Inlet is the town located at the Angle and features a post office, one room school house, golf course, church and multiple resorts. Their next door neighbors are resorts and residents on the Flag Island and Oak Island which is another great destination. Summer or winter, visitors are more than welcome to experience these incredible locations and the lifestyle that they offer.
The best of this season is two-fold. Of course, fishing is more than excellent in these northern waters of the lake, but the very next best thing is the snowmobile trails and the ice roads used to transport businesses and visitors. During summer months, mail and supplies are delivered back and forth from the mainland to the islands but during this season, ice roads provide transportation by snowmobile or track vehicles. Who would expect a four-lane highway across this beautiful body of water.
Many hands, volunteers, business owners and local people have all joined forces to create this extremely exciting location for great numbers of people to enjoy. There is no other location that can compare with the offerings of this area. Stop at Jerry’s Restaurant for a first class lunch before taking off on snowmobile or out to your fish house. The warmth of the café and the warmth of the people will keep in your memory for years to come.
The Northwest Angle Edge Riders Snowmobile Club are an active group that helps groom and maintain the roads as well as the best activities of the winter. Each year the group hosts a Snowmobile Rally for the area. This year’s rally will take place on February 25th, meeting at Jerry’s Restaurant. They sell raffle tickets for the best prize. Check out their website for more details at www.nwaedgeriders.org.
Check out a few of the quotes here from other people on a Facebook sight named Northwest Angle Life. “We LOVE the Angle…We have fun at the Angle, we grew up at the Angle, WE visit the Angle! **You can take me out of the Angle but you can’t take the Angle out of me!”
“Ice roads are the best roads… Flag Island Resort and Oak Island resorts offer a remote sanctuary situated less than 500 feet from the Canadian border. We’re located in the northern tip of Minnesota’s Northwest Angle, about four miles off-shore. Contact us with questions or help coordinating your arrival by vehicle, snowmobile, or tracked vehicle. Not everyone is cut out for this kind of adventure, and that’s what makes it so special!”
“A few volunteers today went out to work on a new land trail on state land. We tried to utilize old logging roads we ran the trail from the north starting at Young’s Bay area and we ran the trail from the south, using a portion of the old Alan Hetteen Trail. Our snowmobile club has 67 members, so someone might have an idea. Our snowmobile rally is three weeks away. We would sure like to run down this new trail the day before the rally if we could figure out a way to clear the area marked with yellow and orange lines on the last picture. We plan to submit a DNR New Trail Grant for a second segment of trail that would go on state land down to Stony Point. We purchased a brush cutter for our Groomer that will help with some of the trail widening. The picture with the arrow is a neat area on the trail that has a rock outcropping that might be an interesting trail stop.”
One of the most impressive things about the people and business owners of the Northwest Angle and Islands is that they have a special camaraderie with each other. That is defined as the mutual trust and friendship among people who spend a lot of time together. That is very apparent as they meet their guests and help each other through trials of the area and the victories.
Enjoy the pictures here of the ice roads, maps, snowmobile trails, etc. And be sure to come and visit the best place in the world to get away and enjoy nature’s beautiful creation.
