Success on Mid Winter Walleyes and Saugers

There are times throughout the winter when walleyes get, well, let’s just say lethargic.  You can see them come through on your electronics, they might even look at your offering, but no results.  There could be a number of reasons why walleyes get sluggish when it comes to eating.  It could be the weather, barometric pressure, time of the day, wrong feeding window, low oxygen in the water, and the list goes on.

There are some techniques that will increase your catch rate when walleyes get stubborn.  In this video, a variety of techniques are discussed that will add some tools to your walleye ice fishing tool belt.

Ice fishing can be interesting.  When you hit the fish cleaning house in the evenings, there are anglers that struggled and others that limited out plus.  In some cases, it had to do with location and fish movements.  In many cases, even if there are not a lot of fish moving below or the weather has the fish funky, there are certainly techniques that will allow you to ice one here and one there eventually leading up to a good looking bucket of fish.

Lake of the Woods enjoys some extended seasons as it is border waters.  Fish houses can be on the ice through March 31st, an entire month longer than the rest of MN.  The walleye and sauger season on Lake of the Woods is open through April 14th.  Pike season is continuous and never closes, nor does perch, crappies, eelpout and tulibees!  Some of the best ice fishing on Lake of the Woods is in February and March.  Get out ice fishing, before you know it, the season will be over!
