Lake of the Woods Fishing is on Fire!

August is a month that many anglers avoid when it comes to walleye fishing.  On Lake of the Woods however, some anglers actually use vacation time to specifically come up in August.  This month has not disappointed and typically September is even better.  Charter boats and guides across the lake have been catching consistent limits of walleyes with a lot of fish between 25 – 30 inches.

Today (Wednesday, August 23rd) while filming an episode of Midwest Outdoors TV, it was simply one of those days when everything just came together.

Joe Henry, 30.5" walleye, Lake of the WoodsI was fishing with Greg Jones, host of Midwest Outdoors.  We were pulling harnesses, some with crawlers, others with frozen shiners teamed up with a bottom bouncer.

The walleyes were active and came in all sizes.  The eyes that had our attention of course were the big ones.  We actually caught three fish over 28 inches along with a 27, 26, 25 along with other slots.  We also caught very nice keeper walleyes and saugers, eventually keeping our limits and filling a cooler.

Anglers are catching walleyes three ways.  Some are jigging both on rock and in the mud.  Others are pulling snelled spinners with crawlers or frozen shiners.  The third way is trolling crankbaits.

cooler of walleyes, Lake of the WoodsThe key to catching walleyes is to get your offering in front of the walleyes.  In the case of crankbaits, there are numerous ways to get your crankbait down to the bottom in depths of 30-35′.  The most common are downriggers, leadcore line, snap on weights and bottom bouncers.  Once in fish zone, hang on as these fish can get big and they are typically aggressive.

Fishing reports across the lake have been positive and with a strong population of walleyes and saugers, it doesn’t come as a surprise.

August and September are excellent times to catch a trophy walleye on Lake of the Woods.  Sometimes it happens, sometimes it does not, but more often than not, some big walleyes will show up while filling the cooler with eater walleyes.
