Ice Fishing Preview

Things are shaping up nicely for the upcoming ice fishing season.  There has been good fish movement on the south shore of Lake of the Woods where many of the resorts located both on the Rainy River and south shore of the lake start out with their fish houses.  Traditionally, the early part of the season has been good fishing along areas in front of Pine Island, Morris Point, Zippel Bay, Long Point and of course the many reefs located out from Arnesen’s.

The winter season also looks optimistic up at the NW Angle.  With a wonderful year and fish being caught in dozens of spots, ice anglers should not have any problem producing a mix bag of walleyes, sauger, jumbo perch and pike.

Some anglers have been working with local resorts and utilizing their ice guides traveling into Ontario waters of Lake of the Woods chasing big crappies in addition to walleyes.  It is important to have a knowledgeable guide as with 14,552 islands, there are many neck down areas that produce current areas and softer ice.  Crappies also are located in key spots that the guides have a good handle on.

I recently had the chance to create a quick pre ice video from the water.  In true Lake of the Woods fashion, during the short message, a walleye decided to make a guest appearance!  For a complete list of resorts, hotels, sleeper fish houses, day houses and guides, check out our website at www.LakeoftheWoodsMN.com/Lodging.  Good luck ice fishing.
