What is Hockey Day MN?

Hockey Day MN 2024, Warroad Hockey Day Minnesota is an annual event in Minnesota run in cooperation with the Minnesota Wild and Bally Sports North that celebrates the sport of hockey throughout the state. Now a multi-day showcase, the event is held in mid-to-late January or early February and typically consists of multiple high school games (a mixture of boys and girls), a men’s and/or women’s college hockey game, and concludes with a Minnesota Wild NHL game. With some games now taking place on Thursday and Friday, the main set of games are played on a Saturday and are broadcast on Bally Sports North. Most of the games are played at a featured outdoor location with a rink built specifically for the event. However, some of the college matchups are played in standard home arenas and all of the Wild games are played in an NHL venue (usually Xcel Energy Center).

What is there to do?

Festivities begin on Thursday, January 25 and conclude on Sunday, January 28, with Hockey Day Minnesota on Saturday, January 27, 2024. See below for a full schedule of events and to get your tickets for HDM 2024!

The hockey rink will be set up on the south end of the Warriors football field on the school’s campus with a hockey village on the north side. Everything from a snow hill, a mini Riverbend Skate Path, firepits, vendors, VIP tents and another small rink, called the “Outlaw Rink and Warroad Lakers History,” will provide warmth and fun during the event.

The community features a 2.5-mile ice path, the Riverbend Skate Path , that connects seven rinks. A small version of that popular wintertime attraction will be on the far north end of the field.Hockey Day MN 2024 3D view

There will be groupings of igloos, a skate path, and a snow hill, lots of space to warm up around the fire or inside a massive entertainment tent with bands, food, beverages and merchandise.

Two large screens will provide a view of the action behind the VIP tent where food trucks, coffee and cocoa huts and the village beer garden will be set up.

This will be a celebration of hockey in Minnesota and in Warroad, but really so much more.  This event is about the the camaraderie and culture, the Native American heritage, and the many hockey legends that have built Hockeytown USA.

Many Benefits to Snowmobile Lake of the Woods

snowmobile trails lake of the woods

It’s that time of year where snowmobile riders start getting that itch again to get out on the snow and ride. Now is the snowmobile time to start making plans to do so. Lake of the Woods and surrounding communities offer miles upon miles of riding trails for snowmobilers. Plenty of lodging makes staying and playing easy to be accommodated with. As of this writing, there is no snow on the ground but that just gives snowmobilers extra time to groom their machines.sleeper fish house border view lodge 12

Enjoy hundreds of miles of connected groomed trails. Our trails are true wilderness trails, as there is less than 5 miles of ditch riding on our trail system. Trails go as far up as the Northwest Angle, as far west as Warroad, south to Waskish and as far east as Big Falls and north up to International Falls.

To the west our trail system hooks up to the Roseau County groomed trails, as well as Kittson County groomed trails and on into North Dakota. To the south we hook up to Beltrami Island State Forest Trails, as well as hundreds of miles of logging trails.

Snowmobile Trail

Northwest Angle and Island areas are accessible from Lake of the Woods or the Can-Am Trail by snowmobile. To the east, the Northern Connection hooks up to the groomed Voyageur Trail West and Arrowhead Trail. Our area is unique by having Lake of the Woods and Rainy River, which both provide ample ice riding.

This area is very fortunate to have two dealers offering two very famous brands of snow machines. These machines are not only durable but are set up with some of the most impressive features for pleasurable riding. Polaris Industries is located in Roseau, a neighboring community, where snowmobiles are produced and shipped all over the country. Artic Cat is also produced and distributed in a nearby town and dealerships are available in Baudette.

We are also fortunate to have two great snowmobile clubs who not only ride for fun, but work very hard at maintaining trails and bridges before the season starts and grooming many many miles of trails throughout the season.

drifters logo Lake of the Woods Drifters Snowmobile Club is located in Lake of the Woods County. They are a very active club and have their own website at www.lakeofthewoodsdrifters.org and FaceBook page at www.facebook.com/lakeofthewoodsdrifters. You can also contact them at lakeofthewoodsdrifters@gmail.com. Each of those sites will provide you with great current information about the trails and great photos that the club has taken. The Northern Connection Trail is very famous as it was carved out of the forest area going east and south of Baudette.

NW Angle Edge Riders Groomer

Lake of the Woods Drifters is a non profit community organization that welcomes members at any time. They also own and maintain shelters throughout the trails to warm up or stop to have lunch and fellowship on the ride. The Club produces a great snow map which is available through the club or through requesting one from Lake of the Woods Tourism. There are over 273 miles of groomed trails to offer adventure through this winter wonderland.

Further north in Lake of the Woods County at the northernmost part of the United States you will find the home of the Northwest Angle Edge Rider Snowmobile Club. Their website is: www.nwaedgeriders.org. There you will find information about the club, about snow conditions, trail conditions, club events, and even places to stay at Angle Inlet. Their FaceBook page is  www.facebook.com/NorthwestAngleEdgeRiders. edgeriders logo

This snow club proudly proclaims they groom over 172 miles of trail during the season. As of this writing,  they state that they are “chomping at the bit” to get out onto the frozen waters of Lake of the Woods and travel many many miles over the frozen waters. This Snow Club stakes trails and produces a great snow map of trails throughout the lake, up to Oak and Flag Island and even into the Canadian part of the lake. The map even features depths of the lake which even open water anglers find very helpful.

This club also hosts a great event during the winter season. Every year they host an Annual Northwest Angle Edge Riders Snowmobile Rally from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. at Flag Island. Food, fun, and door prizes will be available. Keep posted for the 2024 date of this great event.

Venison Meatballs

“I learned to cook game while my husband was a forestry student,” recalls Sheila Reed from Fredericton, New Brunswick. “We lived off the land as much as possible. I still enjoy these savory meatballs in a slightly sweet barbecue sauce. I make a big batch for an annual pool party and there are never any left.”

  • 1/2 cup uncooked instant rice
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 pound ground venison
  • 3/4 cup water

  • 1/3 cup ketchup
  • 1/3 cup condensed tomato soup, undiluted
  • 1 tablespoon ground mustard

Fishing Report 11.14.2023

On the south end…   Just a few anglers out this past week on the big lake.  A combination of a blanket of snow combined with the strong deer hunting traditions across Minnesota has most anglers waiting for ice.
Last report, there are still good numbers of walleyes and saugers in various spots across the south shore chasing schools of shiners.  The ideal depth was 22 – 26 feet of water.  Typically, these fish will hold till early ice conditions allow anglers access.  Early ice fishing could be good.
Resorts and outfitters are working hard making sure fish houses, light ice rigs, bombers, plows, augers, stakes for ice roads / trails, signs and other necessary equipment are ready to roll when it’s time.  We encourage working through resorts and outfitters and staying on marked trails for safety only when they give the green light, which will be a while.
On the Rainy River…   Shiners continue to run in the Rainy River in good numbers.  Some nice walleyes being caught for the few anglers willing to brave the weather.  Now is a great time to fish, especially with unseasonably warm temps.
Jigging with emerald shiners has also been catching the majority of fish in the river.  Target depths range from 8 – 24 feet of water.
Anglers who are targeting sturgeon are having good action as the fish are active.  The river is still open and free of ice.
Up at the NW Angle…  Much like the south end of the lake, fishing for most is pretty much wrapped up.  Back bays and harbors have a skim of ice and most boats are pulled.
Fall fishing was strong and good numbers of walleyes have resorts and anglers optimistic for the winter season.

2023 Pay It Forward Veteran’s Event on Midwest Outdoors TV

Pay It Forward 2023

Sadly, many of our brothers and sisters who served and fought for our country during World War II have departed the earth for greener pastures.  This past week on Lake of the Woods, however, two brothers who are 98 and 95 took part in the 10th Annual Pay It Forward veterans event.  “I thought this event was absolutely unbelievable,” said Fritz Kruschel, a 95 year old veteran from the Twin Cities area who attended this weeks event.

Over 80 veterans took part in this annual event.  The purpose of Pay It Forward is to honor, recognize and celebrate all veterans.  This week did exactly that.

Veterans on charter boat with flag, Pay It Forward “Every year there is magic, and this year was no different,” explained Joe Henry, Executive Director of Lake of the Woods Tourism, a founding member, organizer and emcee of the Pay It Forward event.  “This year, we had a nice variety of veterans including men and women, young and old, and all branches of the military, with the exception of the Space Force.  Veterans came from as far as New Jersey, Texas, Illinois, the Dakotas, Wisconsin and of course, Minnesota,” explained Henry.

Fritz’s older brother is the 98 year old, Bill Kruschel, was also very impressed.  “There is nothing that can compare to this in my life.  Never in 98 years have I ever experienced anything like this.  It was the greatest group of people I have been with that makes it even better.”  Both Fritz and his brother Bill are Navy veterans. Line of Charter boats on Lake of the Woods, Pay It Forward 2023

The two brothers sat on the back of a charter boat in the middle of Lake of the Woods reflecting on the event.  With the cooler full of walleyes, saugers and perch, younger brother Fritz was a bit sentimental as he held on to his brothers arm.  “You know, and I think back, it might be Bill’s and I last time fishing, and if it is, we just had one great time.”  He continued, “You couldn’t explain it any better.  It’s going to be hard to tell our friends back home what a great time we had.”

Joining the Kruschel brothers on the charter boat was Tom Kramine, Chairman of the Minnesota Elks Veterans Services.  “Whenever you can get 88 brothers and sisters together for a few days of healing, I will take it any day and this is a great area to do it.”  Kramine was recently chosen as the Elks Veterans Service Volunteer of the Year and will be representing the Elks Veterans on the Elks float in the Rose Bowl parade in Pasadena, CA  on New Year’s Day.  Kramine is a veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard.

YouTube video

Phil Krabbe, Pay It Forward 2023 This year’s event started out on Monday evening at Sportsman’s Lodge.  After a prayer and pledge of allegiance, the veterans enjoyed a delicious chicken dinner (compliments of US Foods).  Guest speaker and veteran, Phil Krabbe from the Wounded Warrior Project shared his story of hitting rock bottom and how he fought back.  Krabbe wasn’t what you might think of as a speaker, but that isn’t what the group needed.  Krabbe is a warrior who went through some very challenging times and situations and is thankful to be where he is today.

Tuesday, veterans eat breakfast at the resort they are staying.  Just before 8am, they board their assigned charter boat for a day of walleye fishing on the Walleye Capital of the World.  Good numbers of fish were caught.  Some had limits, others had a good start to limits.

That evening, the group met at River Bend Resort for a walleye fish fry.  The group was set up on the patio overlooking the Rainy River.  The night was perfect, with a few geese starting to move around and a million dollar view.

Tom Goodrich, the leader of Fishing For Life was the keynote speaker this evening.  Goodrich was a strong leader in the military and has carried that skill forward to civilian life assisting others navigate life.

Tom Goodrich speaking at River Bend Resort, Pay It Forward 2023 A longtime partner with Lake of the Woods Tourism on the Pay It Forward event since the beginning is Fishing For Life.  The organization serves youth, families, veterans and communities through fishing and outdoor programs.

The group also heard from a member of the Eagle’s Healing Nest out of Sauk Centre, MN.  He discussed the Nest and what it does for vets.

Dave Johnson, 28.5 inch walleye, Pay It Forward 2023 Tom Kramine of the Elks Veterans Services also shared briefly more about how Elks assists veterans and how veterans can get involved.

Wednesday also started out with a good breakfast followed by a second day of walleye fishing.  There is a bit of competition for the top three largest walleyes and largest pike with some nice prizes that go along with them.  This year, the top walleye was 28.5 inches and the top pike, 34 inches.

Aaron Ojard was a medic in the Navy with more than 20 years of service.  He shared with the group some of the extremely challenging experiences he faced while treating and saving the lives of soldiers along with Afghan locals, from kids to adults, over in Kandahar, Afghanistan.  Memories he experienced don’t just go away and he shared how he deals with the memories and how he faces life. Aaron Ojard speaking at Border View Lodge, Pay It Forward 2023

The event was filled with much comradery amongst the variety of veterans.  The connections that were formed and grew throughout the few days was strong and meaningful.

Thursday morning, veterans wake up, have a nice breakfast, say their goodbyes and depart.

The Pay It Forward event is possible through the generous donations of many Lake of the Woods resorts, various businesses and organizations.  The event, in some cases, saves lives.  In most cases, it changes lives for the better.  It is hard to explain the magic that happens each year, but there is definitely magic.  As one veteran put it, “Something about this event is just special compared to anything I have ever experienced.  I am so thankful to have attended.”

If you know of a veteran, perhaps yourself, that would benefit from a Pay It Forward veterans fishing trip on Lake of the Woods, download an application at the Pay It Forward website, www.PayItForwardLOW.org or email Joe Henry at joe.henry@LakeoftheWoodsMN.com. 2023 Pay It Forward sponsors

Young ladies feel the thrill of catching their first small or trophy fish and it gets imbedded in their memories as one of the greatest experiences ever. Remember, this doesn’t have to be a once in a lifetime experience. Why not make it an annual event or better yet summer and winter season experiences.

Ice Fishing for Everyone… We do the Work, You Enjoy the Adventure

bombardier, Lake of the Woods MN

For some, ice fishing is an activity far outside of their comfort zone.  In many cases, they have never done it, never grew up with it, didn’t have an interest or maybe they grew up in another part of the country where ice on lakes didn’t exist.  Regardless of the reason, ice fishing is an activity that is fun, simple, enjoyable and comfortable.  Consequently, everyone can enjoy ice fishing.

Full service ice fishing makes ice fishing possible for the young, old, disabled, etc.  What a great way to enjoy a Minnesota winter than catching walleyes, saugers, perch, eelpout, pike and a variety of other fish with friends and loved ones.

Most think of ice fishing as sitting outside on a bucket.   These are the old days of ice fishing and they could get real cold real quick.  Fun, right?  Hardly.  Not at Lake of the Woods.  Ice fishing takes place in nice heated fish houses.

Resorts like to take great care of folks and make their ice fishing adventure easy and enjoyable.  From heated resort to heated fish house with the holes drilled and set up on top of the fish.  This is ice fishing Lake of the Woods style.CYRUS RESORT CABINS

The heat is on and it is almost like stepping into a living room with a few holes in the floor to fish.  Many families or groups enjoy bringing out their favorite snacks, some music, maybe a few beverages of their liking and the adventure is on.

There are so many fish in Lake of the Woods that normally there is action.  In some cases, it is hard to keep the bobbers on top of the water the fish bite so good.  And then there can be stretches when you wonder if there are any fish in the lake.  By putting in a full day, normally there will be some different flurries of fish activity that provides excitement and of course at the end of the day, a fresh fish fry.

Resorts offer everything from just the lodging where you fish on your own to lodging and ice fishing where they provide the heated fish house to also including all meals.  The package with lodging, fishing and meals is often called the American Plan.

Fish fry, Zippel Bay Resort, Lake of the Woods MN Ice guides will clean your fresh catch.  In many cases, the resort you are staying at will cook up your fresh fish, often consisting of walleyes, saugers and perch.

Why is ice fishing so popular?  People often wonder why this winter activity is so popular at Lake of the Woods.  One reason it is full service ice fishing and really takes the work out of it.  In addition, millions of walleyes and saugers doesn’t hurt.  The behind the scenes infrastructure make ice fishing easy for just about anyone regardless of ability.  With this being said, ice fishing is warm, simple and easy.

The thermostat is set at around 70 degrees.  Most only have to be in the cold a few steps into ice transportation and a few steps into the heated fish house.  As the saying goes, there are two things you need to think about when you participate in full service ice fishing, “what should I wear and what should I eat”.  Everything else is taken care of for you.

When you catch the fish, the guides will even clean them for you.  Some groups enjoy making fish back in their cabins, while others consider vacation a time when they will simply let the resort cook the fish and provide the sides.  Whichever way you roll, no experience necessary for a great fish fry.

Families, couples, business groups and longtime friends take advantage of these fish houses out on the ice.  In between bobbers going down, good conversation, good food and even good drink is part of the atmosphere in a fish house.  For some it’s the fishing.  For others, it’s the social aspects.  Either way, it is a great way to spend a beautiful winter day. Sometimes it helps to actually see how it works rather than read about it.  There are many ways resorts transport you out on the ice to their fish houses.  Some even let you drive your own vehicles on their maintained ice roads.  Check out our ice fishing videos here.

Most everything is provided for your ice fishing adventure.  It is good to check ahead as most resorts expect you will bring or purchase for a nominal fee your short little ice fishing rods and a few key lures.

Some resorts rent electronics that help you see what fish are underneath you and how they are reacting to your baits.  Although certainly not necessary, electronics to show you the fish below you is very helpful and will help you catch more fish.

Ice road with pickup truck, Lake of the Woods Ice fishing is an incredible experience.  Especially on a body of water, or in this case, sheet of ice that can stretch further than the eye can see.  The air is crisp and fresh.  The winter scenery is breathtaking.  The memories you will make will be forever.

Safety is Key at Lake of the Woods

Safety is always the key word at Lake of the Woods. Winter seems to have arrived early and the ground is covered with a few inches of snow. Ice skims are showing up on the bays in the area and that makes Enthused Ice Fishing Anglers Excited!!!

However, today is the time to speak of safety! Because the sport is so popular, people are always itching to get on the ice. We will CAUTION you though to not get ahead of Mother Nature. She has a mind of her own and dictates ice forming and temperatures. zippel bay early ice

Minnesota DNR puts out great guidelines of safety on the ice. Please check out their sight but here’s some info that you must adhere to.

For new, clear ice only

UNDER 4″ – STAY OFF
4″ – Ice fishing or other activities on foot
5″ – 7″ – Snowmobile or ATV
8″ – 12″ – Car or small pickup
12″ – 15″ – Medium truck

Don’t take chances!!  There is always someone who is the first one to walk out, take out an ATV or drive a vehicle.  Let the resorts who are trained, who are on the ice daily and have years of experience guide you in what can be used and what is too heavy for the ice conditions. Resort owners, guides, and those who build the ice roads are always ready to give information to keep everyone who visits this area safe.

Here’s another item to speak about regarding safety!!

White tail deer season is upon us and hunters are scouting the land looking for indications of deer travel and also getting all their gear together for the hunt. Consider Lake of the Woods for your fall hunting destination.

One of the most common way hunters get hurt is by falling from a tree stand.  Many of these falls happen getting in or out of a tree stand.  It is important to be connected to the tree at all times.  Take a few extra minutes this year to take that one extra step for safety!  Your life and well being may depend upon it.

Tree Stand Safety!
1. Always carry a cell phone and keep it on yourself. Don’t put it in a pack that you may take off and hang in the tree because if you fall you want your phone readily available to call for help. safety
2. Always install and maintain tree stands with at least one other person.
3. Check all your steps and straps and replace anything that is worn or weathered.
4. Always wear a full body harness when in a tree stand. Wear it properly.
5. Always use a rope to pull up your gun or bow.
6. Be aware of your surroundings and never shoot towards another hunter.

Gun safety:
1. Become familiar with your firearm. Know how to carry it, load it, unload it, and know what to expect when you pull the trigger.
2. Always assume every gun is loaded and always point the muzzle in a safe direction. Never point your gun at another person.
3. Never put your finger on the trigger unless you intend to shoot.
4. Your firearm has a safety. Keep it in the ‘On’ position until you intend to shoot.
5. Be sure of your target and what is behind it before pulling the trigger.

There are so many different ways for a hunter to get injured or worse during the deer season, but more injuries and deaths are caused by falls from tree stands during the deer season than any other type of accident.

Wear Blaze Orange for Safety!
The visible portion of a cap and outer clothing above the waist, excluding sleeves and gloves, must be blaze orange when hunting or trapping during any open season where deer may be taken by firearms (including special hunts, early antlerless, youth seasons and muzzleloader). Blaze orange includes a camouflage pattern of at least 50 percent blaze orange within each square foot.

Some safety tips for nonhunters:

  • Wear bright clothing. Choose colors that stand out, like red, orange or green, and avoid white, blacks, browns, earth-toned greens and animal-colored clothing. Blaze orange vests and hats are advisable.
  • Don’t forget to protect pets. Get an orange vest for an accompanying dog.
  • Make noise. Whistle, sing or carry on a conversation when walking to alert hunters that someone is in the area. Sound carries well across woods and forests, and hunters should listen for any sounds of animal movement.
  • Be courteous. Don’t make unnecessary noise to disturb wildlife. Avoid confrontations.
  • Make presence known. If a nonhunter hears shooting, the person should raise their voice and let hunters know they’re in vicinity.
  • Know the dates of hunting seasons. Learn about where and when hunting is taking place.
  • If hunting makes a nonhunter uneasy, the nonhunter should choose a hike in a location where hunting is not allowed.

Lake of the Woods loves to have visitors come to the area whether fishing, riding ATVs, hunting or discovering the natural beauty of the area. However, it’s always about safety in all that you do. Enjoy your outdoor adventures!!
