Snow? Let It Snow!!!

snowmobiles parked at a NW Angle resort on Lake of the Woods. Snowmobiling

Snow? When have we prayed for snow up north? Well, this year Mother Nature has given us an interesting winter season! Snow machines are ready and waiting anxiously for inches or perhaps feet of good snow to bring their machines out. As of this writing there is about a one inch dusting on the ground. Lake of the Woods itself is trying very hard to freeze up so that anxious anglers can visit this renowned fishery.

When the ice is safe, snow resort owners and snowmobile clubs are out staking out trails going across the ice to the islands to the north. It’s about 40 miles one way so one has to be quite prepared as they travel with their machines.

Snowmobiling the Lake of the Woods area, some of the best trails in the state.  Enjoy hundreds of miles of connected groomed trails. Our trails are true wilderness trails, as there is less than 5 miles of ditch riding on our trail system. Trails go as far up as the Northwest Angle, as far west as Warroad, south to Waskish and as far east as Big Falls and north up to International Falls.

To the west our trail system hooks up to the Roseau County groomed trails, as well as Kittson County groomed trails and on into North Dakota. To the south we hook up to Beltrami Island State Forest Trails, as well as hundreds of miles of logging trails.

Northwest Angle and Island areas are accessible from Lake of the Woods or the Can-Am Trail by snowmobile. To the east, the Northern Connection hooks up to the  FILE4303-300x224 groomed Voyageur Trail West and Arrowhead Trail. Our area is unique by having Lake of the Woods and Rainy River, which both provide ample ice riding.

snow This area is very fortunate to have two dealers offering two very famous brands of snow machines. These machines are not only durable but are set up with some of the most impressive features for pleasurable riding.

We are also fortunate to have two great snowmobile clubs who not only ride for fun, but work very hard at maintaining trails and bridges before the season starts and grooming many many miles of trails throughout the season.

As of 12.15.2020 they state that they are “chomping at the bit” to get out onto the frozen waters of Lake of the Woods and travel many many miles over the frozen waters. This Snow Club stakes trails and produces a great snow map of trails throughout the lake, up to Oak and Flag Island and even into the Canadian part of the lake. The map even features depths of the lake which even open water anglers find very helpful. You may contact them for a free map or also contact Lake of the Woods Tourism for one.

Fishing Report 12.12.2023

zipple bay resort

On the south end… Ice continues to form and make progress on Lake of the Woods. A strong NW wind this week pushed ice up to the south shore, getting rid of some open water. The hopes are the colder temps will lock everything in. Resort ice guides are monitoring ice thickness, staking trails where there is ample ice and flying drones over the forming ice to stay on top of current conditions.

fishing
Rainy River Ice

Back bays are locked up and there is some spearing for pike taking place. Ice conditions even in back bays vary, so for safety, please work through resorts and outfitters.

Lake of the Woods covers a big area. When a resort or outfitter gives the green light, that is for the specific area of ice they are traveling and fishing on. Conditions can vary greatly from one area to another,so it is important to work through resorts and outfitters in the area you plan on fishing and pay attention to weight restrictions.

In many cases during early ice conditions, resorts will shuttle anglers back and forth to resort fish houses

On the Rainy River… The Rainy River is ice covered. Local resorts and ice guides are monitoring ice conditions in areas of the river they offer ice fishing. Varying ice conditions, work through a resort for safety when access is allowed.

Up at the NW Angle… Angle ice is coming along well. Outfitters and ice guides have been marking ice trails and some local traffic is taking place with ATV’s, etc. The ice roads and trails are not open yet, but much of the ice has frozen smooth and is coming along very nicely.

Some scouting to check spots for walleyes is taking place by ice guides with nice results. Resorts will communicate when fishing begins.

Tom’s Tackle Producing Popular “Keep It Clean” Jigging Spoon for a Second Straight Year

Tom's Tackle Keep It Clean Stop Sign

Perhaps you have heard of Keep It Clean.  It is the organized effort to educate, promote and enforce keeping trash and various forms of waste off of the ice.  A small Minnesota tackle company, Tom’s Tackle, has developed a brand new color of one of their most popular jigging spoons, the Stop Sign, to drive awareness and support the cause.  This proven walleye slayer of a lure has a brand new color and you may have guessed it’s name, “Keep It Clean”.

THE LURE

The Keep It Clean color is glow white combined with the green, yellow and blue logo.  Developers of this lure believe it will be a hit for a number of reasons.  The base of the lure is glow white, a perfect color for stained water lakes and night fishing on any lake.   The Keep It Clean logo which is on top of the glow is green, yellow and blue, mimicking the colors of both perch and small bluegills, a natural forage in many bodies of water.  Keep It Clean Stop Sign Lures

Want to purchase some of the Stop Sign jigging spoons in the new Keep It Clean color?  Simply order from their website or check them out at a retailer, typically in northern Minnesota, who carries Tom’s Tackle products.  The lure sells for $5.99.

TOM’S TACKLE WANTED TO HELP

Todd and Sharon May, owners of Tom’s Tackle, wanted to do their part in not only getting the word out, but also enabling the program to receive some revenues to keep the messaging and promotion of this noteworthy cause moving along.  20% of the profits of this lure will go toward funding the effort of the Keep It Clean group in ultimately curbing the amount of garbage and waste that ends up polluting our waterways for ice fishing, snowmobiling and other winter outdoor activities on our lakes and rivers.

THINGS ARE MOVING FAST

The Keep It Clean effort initially started in the Lake of the Woods area about 10 years ago.  In the past year, other areas have joined the movement in the effort to keep trash and waste off of the ice on our valuable lakes and rivers.  Currently, more than 50 areas of MN and WI have come together for a common effort, representing more than 1,200 lakes.

The Keep It Clean organization is welcoming new destinations, lake associations, soil and water districts, and other organizations who have a vested interest in changing behaviors regarding garbage and waste left on the ice.  There is no cost to join.  There is simply an agreement that must be signed and approved by the group agreeing to guidelines set to maintain structure, branding and integrity of the program.

Once approved, use of the Keep It Clean logo, already developed messaging and signage is available.  In addition, leaders are invited to join other Keep It Clean leaders in moving things forward.

For more information on how to join Keep It Clean for your area or body of water, contact Joe Henry at KeepItCleanMN@gmail.com.

NEW KEEP IT CLEAN LAW IN MN

There is new legislation in Minnesota.  In a nutshell, it is no longer legal to place garbage, trash or any form of waste on the ice.  The new law passed the Minnesota Legislature the spring of 2023 and took effect July, 2023.

Ice fishing has exploded in popularity.  This new law will prevent even good meaning people who enjoy outdoor recreation of all kinds on the ice, from leaving trash and waste behind.

THE KEEP IT CLEAN GROUP EMPHASIZES FIVE IDEAS TO KEEP TRASH AND WASTE OFF OF THE ICE.

  1.  Make a plan for trash and waste removal before you arrive. Whether you access the ice from a public or private entrance, plan to take off of the ice what you take on to it. Many access points and resorts offer garbage collection services. If your site doesn’t, make a plan to transport it home for disposal.
  2.  Use colored garbage bags. In snowy conditions, white trash bags can be difficult to see. Brightly colored bags or black bags are easier to spot making it less likely trash will inadvertently be left behind.
  3.  Keep garbage and human waste off the ice and store it in your vehicle, trailer or fish house. Make sure it’s secure before traveling so that it doesn’t blow out of truck beds or off trailers and sleds.
  4. Check for trash before departing. Make sure that you have picked up any garbage in your area. And if you notice someone else has left something behind, please take a moment to pick it up and bring it with you.
  5.  Allow time and bring the tools you need to move or remove your fish house. Take support blocks, insulation, landscaping fabric, wood and other materials with you and properly dispose of them.

It takes all of us working together to Keep It Clean! Thank you for doing your part to ensure the health of our lakes, rivers, fisheries and watershed areas.

Detailed NW Angle Map Available

Minnesota's NW Angle Map

Detailed map of the NW Angle There is a brand new Detailed Map of the NW Angle!  It is the northernmost point of the contiguous United States, it is where the 14,552 islands of Lake of the Woods begin, it has 15 lodging facilities who cater to anglers and the area is full of walleyes.   And now, it has a brand new map to discover all of it’s key locations and points of interest.

Local resident and explorer, Joe Laurin, led the way on this project, working with Lake of the Woods County.  With help from a specially formed NW Angle Committee, and the feedback from resorts, residents and other area stakeholders, the map went through multiple revisions and is now complete.

We believe this is a great resource for visitors to the Angle.  It lays out in good detail where resorts, harbors, restaurants and other points of interest around the Angle are.  The intent is to not only have this map online (feel free to use it by the way), we will have a physical sign located at Jim’s Corner once the warm weather returns to the area next spring.

Helpful for Ice Anglers

The new map is just in time for this year’s ice fishing season up at the NW Angle.  Ice fishing is awesome on this part of the lake.  A good population of walleyes, a mixed bag of species and of course, the natural beauty.

This winter, visitors looking to travel to the NW Angle have a few great options.

Drive to the NW Angle.  Restrictions for crossing the border have been lifted so driving to the Angle is easy as it has always been.  No more vaccinations, no more testing and no more ArriveCan App (although you can still use it if you like it).  Driving through Roseau or Warroad, you will drive about 40 miles through Canada before entering back into the U.S. up at the Angle.

You must have your credentials to cross into Canada, such as a passport, passport card, enhanced driver’s license or a government issued ID along with an original birth certificate.  Other than that, it’s crossing the border as it was before the pandemic.

Lake of the Woods Passenger Service (Bombardier).  Round trip from the south end of Lake of the Woods up to the Angle, approximately 42 miles.  Bombardier service not only is an adventure, it allows access to the Angle without crossing the border, as crossing the lake keeps travelers in Minnesota.

Snowmobile Trails.  Another typical way some travel to the Angle during the winter months is snowmobile.  The two snowmobile clubs around Lake of the Woods do an excellent job of grooming and staking trails from the south end of Lake of the Woods all the way up to the NW Angle.  One trails comes out of the Wheeler’s Point area.  When the ice is thick enough on the Rainy River, guests could literally take the trail all the way from Baudette to the Angle.  The other route takes guests along the western edge of Lake of the Woods from the Rocky Point, Long Point area or from Warroad north.

NW Angle resorts offer some of the best full service ice fishing in North America.  Heated fish houses are moved often to keep you on the fish.  Anglers will catch walleyes, saugers, jumbo perch, eelpout, pike, and tulibees.  Once in a while, crappies, a muskie or a sturgeon will even make an appearance.

Angle resorts offer both great cooking facilities in their cabins or a number of them have a great bar and restaurant as part of their offerings.  You might be way up north, but don’t for a minute think you will be sacrificing good meals.  The menu offerings in these parts are plentiful and the food is delicious.

When you are staying at the Angle, whether you cook it yourself or let the resort cook it, fresh walleye with all of the trimmings is a tradition that is hard to beat.

Ice fishing the NW Angle is something special.  With this year adding many challenges to our lives, please know that special place to allow relaxation, peace and calming is accessible, just maybe in ways we are not used to.

Fishing Report 12.5.2023

Ice Chunk at Zippel Bay

On the south end…   Ice continues to form and make progress on Lake of the Woods.  With that being said, it is going to take some time before it is safe and fish houses are out.  Resort ice guides have been out checking ice thickness, flying drones over the ice and basically staying on top of current conditions.

Back bays are locked up and there is some spearing for pike that has been happening.  Ice conditions even in back bays vary, so for safety, please work through resorts and outfitters.

Most of Big Traverse Bay is ice covered.  There are still patches of open water, some cracks that have opened up, etc.  This is typical for this time of year and it will be a bit yet before most can give the green light.
Lake of the Woods is big and there are many areas of the lake resorts and outfitters go out on.  Each business will be monitoring ice conditions in their area and make informed decisions when it is allowed to access the ice through their ice access and what weight limits will be allowed.

Resorts and outfitters have started marking trails on the ice in bays and close to shore.  When it is time to get out on the ice, we encourage working through resorts and outfitters and staying on marked trails for safety.

On the Rainy River…   The Rainy River is ice covered.  Local resorts and ice guides are monitoring ice conditions in areas of the river they offer ice fishing.  As you have read in this report previously, work through a resort or outfitter for safety reasons.

Up at the NW Angle…  The Angle is ice covered (as a whole).  Outfitters and ice guides have been marking ice trails.  The ice roads and trails are not open yet, but much of the ice has frozen smooth and is coming along very nicely.

There are always areas throughout the winter where there is current up at the Angle so it is important to stay on the marked trails, both when they open up and throughout the ice fishing season, which goes through March, Mother Nature dependent on course.
